30 UK Egg Producers Flouting Battery Cage Law

For 12-years the UK egg industry assured the Government and a concerned public that they would comply with the European-wide ban on barren battery cages. These cages are too small, barren of litter and have nowhere for the hens to perch.

These cruelly imprisoned chickens are just a live egg-laying machine to the capitalists who still continue to operate illegal factory farms despite it being illegal since January 1, 2012. There are according to Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) thirty such criminal farmers flouting the law.

The Government should impose hefty fines on these egg producers and force immediate compliance. The Government should also make it clear to retailers that under the EU Egg Marketing Regulation it would be illegal for them to sell eggs from these non-compliant producers.

Please TAKE ACTION. Click through to the CIWF web site and send a letter to Jim Paice, the Minister of State at Defra, to take immediate action against the 30 producers involved – and to additionally ensure that none of the illegal eggs enter the UK food chain.

The UK, along with our European partners have taken a very important step in the fight to stop cruelty in food production. Don’t let these 30 arrogant operators continue to stick their fingers up at the law.

The situation is much worse in countries outside the EU though and I hope the CIWF will provide evidence and further campaigns to stop the unnecessary abuse in the food industry.
