Because of the following Amnesty International statement, The Duck Shoot will be publishing a series of posts putting the case for a total ban on executions.
“Our annual death penalty report was released earlier this month and the findings were saddening; executions are on the rise.”
Here is an excerpt from the Amnesty news release, “Death Penalty: New figures show rise in global executions-Asian countries chiefly responsible”.
* 2,390 executions worldwide in 2008 – 72% per cent in China alone
* Japan executed highest number for over 30 years
* Belarus is ‘last executioner in Europe’
Amnesty International today revealed that the number of executions in 2008 rose significantly compared to the previous year, while more countries in Asia made use of the death penalty than any other region of the world.
The findings, contained in the human rights organization’s annual survey of global death penalty use from January-December 2008 (Death Sentences and Executions in 2008), show that at least 2,390 people were executed in 25 countries last year, up from 1,252 in 2007. Meanwhile, there were at least 8,864 death sentences handed down in 52 different countries.
The article was published on 24 March 2009 and you can read it in full here.

Absolutely James. The lust for blood by a country’s authorities, press and citizens leads time and time again to deadly mistakes. Those mistakes cannot be undone. That’s a good enough reason to abolish the death penalty.
It is unbelievable that these enlightened times nations continue this barbaric practice. Life should mean maybe 30 years and then if a mistake has been made the accused will be alive. The point is for the people who only want revenge, instead of rehabilitation, 30 years takes away the best of a persons life. Is that not revenge enough?
