Corrupt African officials are forcefully evicting families from their houses without their consent and without providing new homes or compensation. Simeon Mawanza, Amnesty International Africa Researcher narrates the above short video that shows the shocking story of families whose homes were destroyed in Africa.
Officials often remove them against their will using excessive force and provide no compensation for the loss of their homes and possessions. In particular the Deep Sea Settlement evictions in Kenya are of immediate concern but this is just one instance of human rights abuse in Africa. Continued pressure on African governments must be maintained and Amnesty along with other partner organizations are fulfilling that task. But they need our support!
Today, October 5, 2009, is world habitat day. I ask you to take action along with Amnesty International members across the world and campaign to stop forced evictions in Africa.
