Death Penalty: China Continues To Execute Individuals Convicted By Unfair Trials

China continues to execute individuals convicted by unfair trials despite world-wide condemnation. Calls for open and transparent trials is ignored and hasty hearings where the accused are denied free legal representation are then upheld by equally dubious higher court judgements.

China targets minorities and dissidents who oppose the regime or demonstrate against it. Recently the Chinese authorities executed several Uyghurs and Tibetans after ethnic clashes. The “ethnic clashes” were of course protests against unfair treatment by China and as we saw on the rare news footage most of the violence was perpetrated by the authorities.

Amnesty International reports that defendants are tried secretly in less than one day and were denied free legal representation. “In hastily executing these individuals after unfair trials, the Chinese authorities are perpetuating some of the very injustices that helped trigger the outburst of violence in the first place,” said Roseann Rife, deputy director of Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific programme.

The death penalty is nothing more than state sanctioned murder and must be abolished.
