Happy Birthday Google – I Just Wish No Evil Was Real

Google the search engine that revolutionized search  on the Internet is 11-years old today. With a funny name and founders who, at the time, were still wet behind the ears I don’t think many at the time expected Google to succeed.

With regard to search innovation Google does excel but in other areas fleeting glimpses of the Devil are seen.

As an employer Google was regarded as the Nirvana of work places but if that were true why do people quit in dissatisfaction?

When expanding to countries, such as China, Google has let it’s principles drop to take advantage of the huge income it derives from these emerging nations.

Googles customers get punished for infringing it’s ever more complex set of rules applied to using it’s service. Shouldn’t there be a transparent appeals system so that customers know why they are penalised or banned? Shouldn’t users be warned of rule infringements before castration so they can adjust their practises? Google thinks not because their rules are “clearly published”.

Which of course they are but you know what? Most people have a life. They don’t want to use their precious time learning Google-Law off by heart.

And what about search results? Google does a good job of filtering out child-abuse sites but what about hate-sites? Some say, including Google, that it’s not a company’s job to be a censor but if that’s the case why do they exclude the former?

They hunt down and exclude paedophile sites because they are illegal NOT because they are EVIL. Google is not a censor out of morality it responds to the forces of higher authorities like the US Justice System and China’s oppression.

“Evil,” says Google CEO Eric Schmidt, “is what Sergey says is evil.”
