I live in the UK some European countries have a better system some not so good but the poor do not die for lack of health care.
So here in the UK when I am sick I book an appointment with my doctor and it’s ‘FREE’. The medical prescriptions are provided at a fixed rate of approximately 10 – 11 dollars. If you are unemployed, pregnant, still at school, over 60, disabled or chronically sick prescriptions are ‘FREE’. Hospital treatment is ‘FREE’ unless you opt to buy private insurance and get private treatment but that is YOUR choice.
Some dental treatment is available free for all but most in work pay. The groups who qualify for free prescriptions also get dental treatment free.
When I travel to other European countries there is a reciprocal agreement with the UK that gets me free treatment there too.
So how is this ‘FREE’ treatment all paid for? Everybody in work pays National Insurance (UK) this amount is deducted from salaries and the level of payment is calculated according to what you earn. So the better off pay for the poorer in our society. So what? The nation that ignores its poor is a failed nation. Our system is not perfect but it’s a damn sight better than you guys in the US have.
Barak Obama’s healthcare reforms are under threat. Here’s a clip from The Young Turks where Cenk Uygur pleads with Americans to take action before it’s too late.
