Back in January 2008 dozens of suspected gang members were arrested in Italy accused of smuggling women from Nigeria to work as drug couriers and prostitutes.
The women from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe are lured by the prospect of well-paid work in shops and factories. They have no idea of the real reason they are being taken from their country.
Their dreams of a better life often end in a brothel. Isoke Aikpitanyi from Nigeria is one of those women, she tells us her story.
This is s global scandal that many countries have pledged to fight but in practice at best fail miserably or even target the victims with prosecutions, imprisonment and deportation for illegal entry and working as prostitutes. Their rapist kidnappers mostly get away without any sanctions whatsoever and merely move on and replace their stock with more unsuspecting victims.
As you can see from this video and the report here Italy is investigating and prosecuting traffickers and has had some success. How’s your country doing? Are they doing enough? Why not ask your government what it is doing and what success they are having?
