Over-The-Top Cops Get A Roasting From Judge

This story highlights what happens when governments give the Police too much power. Increasingly the police are using anti-terrorism laws against ordinary citizens doing ordinary things. Things like taking photographs in the street and carrying one’s lunch in a rucksack.

In this particular case two journalists, a police officer and his son were arrested in connection with information allegedly passed between the police officer and the journalists. A list of the alleged inappropriately leaked information can be found in this BBC report of the case.

But the over-the-top cops got a roasting from the judge hearing the case, Judge Richard Southwell, when he ruled that Thames Valley Police had breached the journalists’ Article 10 rights. In other words they had acted illegally!

Big Brother has established himself in the land of the Magna Carta.

What is worrying is that the case only collapsed because it breached “Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights”. It will of course prevent the police from prosecuting journalists and quite rightly so but about Joe and Jo public with there digital Samsungs and rucksacks?
