A mother sent her daughter Komal, a 5-year-old to buy some things. Instead she was captured by locals who accused her of stealing money and taken to the police who then beat her up. The amount? Just 280 Rupees which is less than 6 USD (3.50 UKP, 4.00 Euro).
Other than the accusers there is no evidence of the girl stealing and according to the mother there was a chase and her daughter was mistakenly picked up by the pursuers. Whatever the truth this little girl was only five, a minor, and she should have been protected by the police until her parents came for her.
What ensued is just too shocking to contemplate. The police from the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, India, who towered over the tiny girl, beat her up. The Station House Officer (SHO) and sub-Inspectors were involved and “decided to teach her a lesson”.
Two officers were suspended but I do not know the outcome, whether they were charged and convicted or just let-off like cops are in the United Kingdom, USA and sadly most other countries of the world.

Update: I have tried to find other sources of this story but the most only show the video with the YouTube description. However, I did find this blog post that goes into a lot more detail. The girl could be eight not five but other than clarification for accuracy this fact makes no difference to the shocking nature of this report.
