Stupid Olympic Committee Accepted China’s Word But Human Rights Are Worse

Amnesty International reports that the Chinese authorities have broken their promise to improve the country’s human rights situation.

In their latest report to mark the 10-day countdown to the Games they have evaluated the performance of the Chinese authorities in relation to “the core Olympic values of ’universal fundamental ethical principles’ and ‘human dignity’: these include persecution of human rights activists, detention without trial, censorship and the death penalty.”

Far from improving human rights in China things have got worse. How the members of the Olympic committee were fooled by the silver tongued liars in the Chinese Government we can but wonder because nobody in the human rights movement believed them.

It seems that the Chinese Government is also worried about foreign journalists reports inside the country. Past promises and compromises seems to represent nothing when the Communist Party own interests in keeping the Chinese people under deep censorship are concerned. Bad news for fundamental rights supporters around the world.

It’s all pretty undisturbing …. surely there’s no denying that the Chinese Government has failed to live up to the promises it made when it was awarded the right to host the Games.

Wang Wei, the Beijing organising commitee’s vice president, said in July 2001: “We will give the media complete freedom to report when they come to China.”

But still, months after the March riots in Tibet, journalists are not allowed into the region, dissidents are still being jailed, websites are still being censorship, China people are still be executed ….

Is anyone going to hold them to account?
