Police estimate that 35,000 people marched at the central London G20 protest today. That means there were probably nearer 50 thousand as the police always deliberately underestimate attendance at protests.
Today’s march was the start of week-long protests demanding action on poverty, climate change and justice. The groups attending include trade unions, environmentalists, churches and anti-war groups.
Placards bearing the slogans “Put People First”, “Jobs, Justice & Climate”, Out Of Iraq and Afghanistan” and “Hang A Banker” were waved by the marchers. Many people were on the streets for their first protest. Some inspired by the global recession brought on by the greedy bankers and warmongers such as George Bush and Tony Blair.
Will the G20 leaders see the anger of the people and take notice? I doubt it. How can we expect such a course of action when the war criminals George Bush, Dick Cheney, Tony Blair and Jack Straw, to name a few, have not been brought to book for their crimes? How can we expect justice when the very people that brought the world economy to it’s knees have been rewarded with millions of dollars in bonuses? How can we expect justice when instead of pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan more troops have been sent there.
No, don’t expect miracles but also don’t give up. Protests do work, eventually. Most times not as soon as people want and not always exactly how the people want it to happen but some progress is always made. All advances in justice, human rights, employment law and women’s rights have been hard earned. If we stop the pressure, if we stop marching, if we stop protesting progress will go in reverse.
To a great extent the rights of the working classes, the rights of the poor and human rights have taken a bashing in recent years especially since 9/11. But working class rights took a set-back in the UK when Thatcher was in power and in the USA when Reagan was president. The elite won’t give up easily we have to keep fighting for justice and our human rights.
