World Aids Day. Two pills, 50 cents (30p) a day and deaths can be prevented. So why is not happening? South Africa has the largest population of people infected with HIV in the world and in many cases children of parents infected with the virus are left orphaned. Corrupt African officials are forcefully evicting families from their houses without their consent and without providing new homes or compensation. Officials often remove them against their will using excessive force and provide no compensation for the loss of their homes and possessions. In particular the Deep Sea Settlement evictions in Kenya are of immediate concern. “You can’t resolve AIDS with the distribution of condoms … On the contrary, it increases the problem” says Pope. |
