“The flimsiest of evidence was allowed to stand because her defence lawyer, one of the worst in recent American history, failed to see her until two weeks before the trial. He was so disinterested in the case, he failed to interrogate prosecution witnesses and to call to the stand those who would most certainly have saved Linda’s life.”

Threat to the Iraqi Teachers Union by the Iraqi government and Iraqi political parties.
China continues to execute individuals convicted by unfair trials despite world-wide condemnation. Calls for open and transparent trials is ignored and hasty hearings where the accused are denied free legal representation are then upheld by equally dubious higher court judgements.
British police have been abusing their powers under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and the Government wants them to carry on doing so. Here are some of the reactions from the press and human rights organisations.
The Government yet again have egg on their face. I don’t think there has been a British government that has broken the law as much as this one which came to power before the turn of the century. More innocent people are going to be abused by out-of-control cops because the Home Secretary Alan Johnson has given them the green-light despite the ruling.
I find it incredible that there are, despite all the evidence, still people who believe the Taser gun to be non-lethal.
The United Nations has declared it an instrument of torture. Amnesty International has been warning about their use for years.
I doubt that police authorities expected the level of Taser abuse that has now reached epidemic proportions. The idea of a weapon that would not kill but incapacitate a violent or threatening suspect must have seemed like manna from heaven.
The general consensus appears to be that Tasers would be used instead of guns therefore reducing deaths at point of arrest. Whether that was a sensible assumption is subject to debate but in practice we now have gung-ho cops using them for the flimsiest of excuses.
Ask the question “exactly what is torture?” and most people will proffer an answer. But the mental picture conjured up in your audiences mind will probably differ from person to person. The medieval rack and thumbscrew will come to the minds of many of course but while most of the ancient methods are no longer used they have been replaced with equally heinous practices in modern times. Water-boarding by the United States Secret Service being one exception that has been reborn in recent times.
Here is a report from Amnesty International demanding justice for murdered journalist Brad Will. Brad was a US video journalist, he was shot and killed in Oaxaca City, southern Mexico. It was on
