A Canadian pressure group has produced the most powerful video on climate change I have ever seen. The group named Moms Against Climate Change are rallying support from Canadians to lobby their Conservative Prime Minister. The video is awesome.

Ask the question “exactly what is torture?” and most people will proffer an answer. But the mental picture conjured up in your audiences mind will probably differ from person to person. The medieval rack and thumbscrew will come to the minds of many of course but while most of the ancient methods are no longer used they have been replaced with equally heinous practices in modern times. I read an interesting and well balanced article in the London Guardian today. It was written by Rebiya Kadeer the president of the World Uighur Congress and author of Dragon Fighter: One Woman’s Epic Struggle for Peace with China (Kales Press, 2009). She compares the history of the African-American civil rights struggle with the emerging Uighur struggles in China. A young Iranian woman with a promising future is murdered in cold blood by a government thug. Neda Agha-Soltan was on her way to protest against the illegal Iranian regime who remain in power despite losing a recent election. Today’s march was the start of week-long protests demanding action on poverty, climate change and justice. The groups attending include trade unions, environmentalists, churches and anti-war groups. Placards bearing the slogans “Put People First”, “Jobs, Justice & Climate”, Out Of Iraq and Afghanistan” and “Hang A Banker” were waved by the marchers. |
