Joe Arpaio, the vicious, cruel and corrupt Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona is a symbol of a society that has become infected with hatred and fear. Arpaio’s brand of ‘law enforcement’ is now becoming commonplace not only within the United States but wherever the US has or attempts to grab control. It’s infected the police [...] Whatever your nationality or your religion if you believe in humanity and justice you will oppose brutality and demand your government chooses the road to peace. I particularly call to Jewish and Israeli people – demand peace, stop this brutality, live in peace with your neighbours. Calm the might of the Israeli government and armed forces, isolate the extremists on both sides of the conflict. On ABC News February 14, former Vice President Dick Cheney boasted, “I was a big supporter of waterboarding”. In the interview he confessed to being a key player in the commission of war crimes during the Bush administration. Here’s a story first read on the Reprieve web site that is not only disturbing in itself but even more disturbing that it exposes the Obama Administration as being, in it’s approach to openness and transparency at least, just as corrupt as the Bush regime. Now I am not suggesting that all cops are ignorant, sadistic low-life. But the more I research, the more I read and almost every time I come into contact with cops (yes, here in England too) even to ask directions I have to conclude that a good cop is an exception. I doubt that police authorities expected the level of Taser abuse that has now reached epidemic proportions. The idea of a weapon that would not kill but incapacitate a violent or threatening suspect must have seemed like manna from heaven. The general consensus appears to be that Tasers would be used instead of guns therefore reducing deaths at point of arrest. Whether that was a sensible assumption is subject to debate but in practice we now have gung-ho cops using them for the flimsiest of excuses. Ask the question “exactly what is torture?” and most people will proffer an answer. But the mental picture conjured up in your audiences mind will probably differ from person to person. The medieval rack and thumbscrew will come to the minds of many of course but while most of the ancient methods are no longer used they have been replaced with equally heinous practices in modern times. Water-boarding by the United States Secret Service being one exception that has been reborn in recent times. Veterans are standing with musicians, including Trent Reznor, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Rise Against, Rosanne Cash, Billy Bragg and the Roots and joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo. I am dumbfounded at the sheer depravity of US cops. This story takes the already unbelievable to the lowest ebb of credibility with regard to police behaviour . What the fuck is going on in the US of America? When are the authorities going to put a stop to this brutality? Muntadar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at war-criminal President George Bush, was tortured while in prison and now fears for his life. Originally Mr al-Zaidi was sentenced to three-years in jail for his heroic act of, unfortunately, off-target footwear lobbing. This was reduced to one-year on appeal and he also got a further 3-month reduction for good behaviour. Cops in Tennessee arrest a guy wanted on a domestic violence charge. He gets out of the car with his hands raised but they allow a police dog to attack him and then they plant drugs on the him. Exactly just what this incident is about I cannot say. There is not a lot of information either on YouTube or in the comments. However, the child looks about 10-years old and it took three cops to carry out an arrest including ‘cuffing’ the little girl. As you see from the video Mr Dziekanski couldn’t speak English and another news report quotes a witness as saying he told the cops this. Despite knowing it they gave him instructions in English and expected him to comply. Rory Rickwood designed his Taser Protest Graphic as a response to the killing of Mr. Dziekanski. |
