Sixty-Four Containers with 1,400 tonnes of toxic waste are languishing in three Brazilian ports. Inside the illegal shipments are batteries, syringes, condoms and nappies (diapers). The containers were found in the port of Santos in the state of São Paulo and two other ports in the state of Rio Grande de Sul.
Since the initial discovery a further 64 containers of hospital waste have been found. The British Embassy says that the UK is totally opposed to illegal waste trade and will take “immediate steps”.
There is widespread anger in Brazil and officials have stated that Brazil is not prepared to be “the world’s rubbish bin”.
The Environment Agency confirmed the Brazilians have named Worldwide Biorecyclables and UK Multiplas Recycling. A spokesman says those responsible could face prosecution but would not confirm or deny the agency was investigating the two companies.
How many times have we heard the capitalist corporations boast of being green and caring about people and the environment? It’s all bullshit – they will always go the cheapest way whatever the cost to our planet.
Because of the prompt action of the Brazilian Authorities, they’ve already fined 5 companies in Brazil, and action by the UK Environment Agency the waste is coming back to England where it originated. Now the UK must heavily fine the greedy bosses responsible for this outrage.
